No. 28 South Carolina Blanks Furman, 7-0, In Paladins' Season Opener

COLUMBIA, S.C. – No. 28 South Carolina blanked Furman, 7-0, Sunday at the USC Field House in Columba, S.C., in Paladins' season opener.

The Gamecocks won two out of three doubles matches to clinch the opening point.  Caroline Dailey and Ingrid Gamarra Martins downed junior Ansley Speaks and freshman Katarina Weymouth, 6-2, at flight one, and Megen Cochran and Rachel Rohrabacher teamed up to beat junior Karlee Bryde and sophomore Harper Caswell, 6-3, at flight three.  The flight two match was unfinished.

South Carolina swept the singles matches, as 43rd-ranked Paige Cline defeated Speaks, 6-2, 6-1, in the top-seeded match-up, and Dailey topped Weymouth, 7-6(6), 7-5, at flight two.  In the number three match-up, Brigit Folland posted a 6-0, 6-3 win over junior Blair Martin, and Martins bested Bryde, 6-2, 6-2, at flight four.  In the final two matches of the night, Berg beat rookie Gabby  Rodriguez, 6-0, 6-0, at flight five, and Rohrabacher outlasted Caswell, 6-3, 6-2, at number six.

The Paladins (0-1) will return to the court on Monday as Furman plays host to South Alabama at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
