Paladins Cruise To 5-2 Victory Over Charlotte

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman cruised to a 5-2 victory over Charlotte Friday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The 49ers won two of three doubles matches to grab the opening point.  Paladin sophomore Harper Caswell and junior Karlee Bryde downed Tyler Baker and Macy Vonderschmidt, 6-2, at flight three, then Charlotte's Sierra Stone and Fleur Holtkamp teamed up to beat junior Blair Martin and freshman Gabby Rodriguez, 6-2, at flight two to set up a decisive flight one match-up.  Tai Martin and Victoria Pahlett scored a 7-6(7) victory over junior Ansley Speaks and freshman Katarina Weymouth for the point.

In singles play, Furman won five out of six matches for the win.  Speaks beat Martin, 6-2, 6-2, in the top-seeded contest, and Weymouth posted a 6-0, 6-1 advantage over Pahlett at flight two.  Martin tallied a 6-3, 6-0 victory against Vonderschmidt at flight three, and at flight five, Rodriguez topped Holtkamp, 6-2, 6-2.  In the sixth-seeded match, Caswell defeated Alexander Lee, 6-3, 6-3.

Charlotte scored a second point at flight four, as Baker beat Bryde, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-5).

The Paladins (5-7) will play host to Winthrop Saturday at 1 p.m.
