Furman Opens Spring Break Trip With 6-1 Win At Cal State Northridge

NORTHRIDGE, CALIF. – The Furman women's tennis team opened its Spring Break trip to California with a 6-1 win at Cal State Northridge on Wednesday.

The Paladins swept the doubles matches to open the match.  Junior Ansley Speaks and freshman Katarina Weymouth teamed up for a 6-3 win over Mickey Hsu and Kristen Poei at flight one, and junior Blair Martin and rookie Gabby Rodriguez beat Skyla Alcon and Vivian Lin, 6-3, at flight two.  In the third-seeded contest, sophomore Harper Caswell and junior Karlee Bryde downed Kiryang Kim and Mari Taslagyan, 6-4.

Furman captured five of six singles victories, winning all three matches that went to a third set.  Speaks topped Hsu, 7-5, 6-1, in the top-seeded match-up, and Weymouth came from behind to defeat Lin, 6-7, 6-1, 6-1.  At flight three, Martin posted a 6-4, 7-6 advantage versus Poei, and Bryde recorded a 2-6, 7-5, 6-4 victory versus Kim at number five.  Caswell held on to beat Tasagyan, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3, in the flight six match.

The Matadors lone point came at flight four, where Alcon tallied a 6-3, 6-4 win over Rodriguez.

The Paladins (6-8) will conclude the team's Spring Break trip at UC Irvine Friday at 4:30 p.m.
