CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team concluded play Saturday at the USTA/ITA Carolina Regional Championships at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Stadium in Chapel Hill, N.C. The tournament showcased the top women's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
All three of the Paladin competitors posted opening-round victories in singles. Sophomore Katty Weymouth defeated Annika Silanpaa of UNC Wilmington, 6-2, 6-2, and senior Ansley Speaks beat South Carolina's Mia Horvit, 6-3, 6-4. Freshman Katarina Kozarov posted a 6-0, 6-1 win over Sandra Bolstad of Gardner Webb.
The Paladin duo of Weymouth and Kozarov teamed up to beat Clemson's Sydney Riley and Daniella Ruiz, 8-3, in the opening doubles round of 64 then topped the South Carolina team of Hadley Berg, a 2016 All-American who is ranked seventh nationally, and Brigit Folland, 8-6, in the second round.
"All three of our girls who competed this weekend played well and showed a lot of improvement," said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen. "This was Katty and Katarina's first time playing doubles together, so for them to beat strong pairs from Clemson and South Carolina shows that they can be a strong pair for us. We have gotten better each week, and we look forward to two more good weeks of competition to finish the fall season."
Furman will compete at the Georgia State Fall Tournament in Atlanta, Ga., Oct. 28-30.
