Furman Outlasts Elon, 4-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman slipped past Elon, 4-3, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins clinched the crucial doubles point to open the match.  Senior Ansley Speaks and junior Aryn Greene teamed up to beat Alex Koniaev and Maria Paraja, 6-1, at flight one, and freshmen Danni Vines and Hannah Ferrett defeated Kirsten Ward and Suzanne Zenoni, 6-2, at number three.  The flight two match was unfinished, with Furman senior Blair Martin and sophomore Gabby Rodriguez leading Olivia Lucas and Erica Braschi, 4-2.

Furman picked up two quick singles points to take a 3-0 advantage.  Speaks beat Braschi, 6-2, 6-0, at flight one, and Vines topped Zenoni, 6-3, 6-2, at number two.  Elon scored at flight three when Lucas came from behind for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory versus rookie Katarina Kozarov, but Ferrett clinched the match for the Paladins with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Ward at flight six. 

The Phoenix captured the final two points, as Paraja outlasted Greene, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, at number four, and Koniaev defeated Rodriguez, 1-6, 7-6(5), 1-0(5), at flight six.

Furman (4-2) will square off against Tennessee on Sunday at 10 a.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
