GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman downed USC Upstate, 6-1, Saturday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins swept the doubles matches to take the opening point. Senior Ansley Speaks and junior Aryn Green teamed up to beat Carol Sigaki and Vale Zarama, 6-3, at number one, and sophomore Katty Weymouth and rookie Danni Vines defeated Filippa Ericson and Eduarda Ferreira, 6-3, at flight two. In the flight three match-up, sophomore Gabby Rodriguez and freshman Katarina Kozarov blanked Morgan Dodd and Taylor Dodd, 6-0.
Furman won five of six singles matches for the victory. Weymouth outlasted Sigaki, 6-4, 6-7(0-7), 1-0(10-6) in the top-seeded contest, and Vines beat Zarama, 6-2, 6-1, at flight two. Freshman Hannah Ferrett recorded a 6-2, 6-4 win versus Ericson at flight three, and senior Blair Martin held on for a 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 advantage over Ferreira at number four. Rookie Anna Walter blanked Morgan Dodd, 6-0, 6-0, at flight six.
The Spartans lone point came at flight five, where Taylor Dodd beat Greene, 7-5, 3-6, 1-0(10-6).
Earlier in the day, Furman fell at Clemson, 5-2. The Paladins picked up singles wins at flight one and flight six in the contest. Speaks held on for a 7-5, 0-6, 7-5 victory over Ayan Broomfield in the top-seeded match-up, and Ferrett topped Jenny Moinard, 6-1, 6-3, at number six.
The Paladins dropped close matches at flights two and four, as Fernanda Navarro defeated Weymouth, 7-5, 7-6(7-1) at number two, and Sydney Riley posted a 7-5, 7-6(7-4) win against Kozarov at flight four.
Furman (8-5) will play host to South Carolina State Thursday at 2:30 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
