GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team blanked Western Carolina, 7-0, Wednesday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C., to clinch the 2017 Southern Conference regular season title.  The title, which is the Paladins' 20th overall, is the second-straight regular season title for Furman.

The Paladins, who boast a 13 match winning streak and have won 15 of their last 16 matches, claimed all three doubles matches to claim the opening point.  Senior Ansley Speaks and junior Aryn Greene beat Savannah Taranto and Madison Riley, 6-4, at flight one, and freshman Danni Vines and sophomore Katty Weymouth topped Lauren McCall and Jordan Strickland, 6-4, at number two.  Freshman Katarina Kozarov and senior Blair Martin won by default at flight three.

Furman swept the singles matches in straight sets for the victory.  Speaks, who ranks 125th nationally in singles, posted a 6-2, 6-1 advantage over Strickland at number one, and Weymouth blanked Taranto, 6-0, 6-0, at flight two.  At flight three, Vines scored a 6-1, 6-1 win over Riley, and Kozarov shut out Elizabeth Ansari, 6-0, 6-0, at number four.  Freshman Hannah Ferrett defeated McCall, 6-2, 6-1, at flight five, and Greene won by default at number six.

"Our team came out really focused in singles from the first ball to the last," said Paladin head coach Adam Herendeen.  "This group has accomplished a lot during the regular season and deserves all the credit for how hard they have worked and how they have continued to improve.  However, we also know that the most important matches of the season are still to come, so we are eager to get back to work and see how far we can go."

Furman (20-5, 7-0 SoCon) enters the Southern Conference Championships as the No. 1 seed.  Complete brackets for the tournament will be released on Saturday.  The Paladins are set to face No. 8 Western Carolina on Friday, April 21, at 8:30 a.m. at the John E. Reeves Tennis Center on Wofford's campus in Spartanburg, S.C. in the tournament's opening match.
