Furman Stops Emmanuel, 6-1, Falls To Winthrop, 4-3


GREENVILLE, S.C. – Furman stopped Emmanuel, 6-1, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins won the top two doubles matches to take the opening point.  Sophomore Katarina Kozarov and senior Aryn Greene downed Fantine Botella and Chloe O'Connor, 6-1, at flight one, and freshmen Carol Elizabeth Kerman and Georgie Walker scored a 6-1 victory over Maria Raich and Katharina Kiderlen, in the second-seeded contest.  The flight three match was unfinished.

In singles play, the Paladins swept the top five matches.  Kozarov bested Botella, 6-1, 6-4, at flight one, and junior Katty Weymouth topped Pearllan Cipriano, 6-0, 6-2, at number two.  At flight three, sophomore Danni Vines defeated Raich, 6-2, 6-1, and Kerman posted a 6-2, 6-0 advantage over Victoria Silva at flight four.  In the number five contest, Walker defeated Kiderlen, 6-0, 6-1.

The Lions won by default due to injury at flight six.

Earlier in the day, Winthrop handed the Paladins a 4-3 loss.  The Eagles won the doubles point with victories at flights one and two.  Winthrop's Lauren Proctor and Megan Kauffman teamed up to beat Kozarov and Greene, 6-2, in the top-seeded contest, then Kerman and Walker evened the slate with a 6-2 victory over Aida Kelicc and Ellie Burns at flight three.  In the decisive flight two match, Alisa Soloveva and Tayla Van Eck came from behind to slip past Weymouth and Vines, 7-5.

The doubles point proved to the the difference, as the teams were evenly split in singles.  Winthrop's Proctor, who is ranked 20th nationally, downed Kozarov, 6-1, 6-1, at flight one, then Kauffman recorded a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Vines at flight three to give the Eagles a 3-0 lead. 

The Paladins fought back with wins at flights four through six to tie the score at 3-all.  Greene defeated Van Eck, 6-2, 7-5, at number four, and Kerman held off Kelic, 0-6, 6-3, 6-3, at number five.  At flight six, Walker tallied a 7-5, 6-2 win over Alya Mourad.  The decisive flight two match went three sets, with Soloveva taking a 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-0 victory over Weymouth.

Furman (5-6) will entertain USC Upstate Wednesday at 4 p.m.
