Furman Holds Off Georgia State, 4-3

GREENVILLE, S.C. – With the teams tied at 3-apiece, freshman Georgie Walker held off Lara Vovk, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0, at flight five to lead Furman past Georgia State, 4-3, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins won the doubles point to open the match.  Freshmen Georgie Walker and Carol Elizabeth Kerman won by default at flight three, then sophomore Katarina Kozarov and senior Gabby Rodriguez teamed up for a 6-3 victory over Kristin Rehse and Damira Muminovic at flight two.  The flight one match was unfinished.

Furman headed into singles with a 2-0 lead, as Rodriguez won by default at flight six singles.  The Paladins stretched the lead to 3-0 after Kozarov downed Rehse, 6-2, 6-2, in the top seeded singles contest, but the Panthers won the next three matches to tie the match at 3-all.  Elizabet Danailova defeated junior Katty Weymouth, 6-4, 6-1, at flight two, and Muminovic topped Kerman, 6-3, 6-3, at number four.  At flight three, Daniela Ramirez came from behind for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 advantage versus sophomore Danni Vines, setting up the decisive flight five contest.

"I am really proud of and happy for our team," said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen.  "We have been working so hard and training at a really high level, and it showed today against a very good Georgia State team.  To have a freshman out there in the last match, and for her to play like she did in that third set, shows just how resilient this group is.  We are excited to kick off conference play with another tough match at Mercer tomorrow."

Furman (8-8), the reigning Southern Conference Champion, opens the 2018 SoCon season on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Mercer.
