Furman Downs Samford, 5-2, To Clinch SoCon Regular Season Title

2018 SoCon Women's Tennis Championship Bracket

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman downed Samford, 5-2, Saturday in the team's Senior Day contest at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

With the win, Furman (17-8, 7-0 SoCon) clinched the Southern Conference regular season title and earns the No. 1 seed in next weekend's league tournament.  The title, which is the Paladins' third-straight, is Furman's 22nd overall.  The Paladins will face UNC Greensboro Friday at 1 p.m. in the opening round of the conference championships, which will be held at the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.

Furman won two of three doubles matches to claim the opening point.  Senior Gabby Rodriguez and freshman Carol Elizabeth Kerman defeated Holy Horsfall and Elsa Pool, 7-6, at flight two doubles, and freshman Georgie Walker and sophomore Danni Vines held off Arianna Beltrame and Grace Jennings, 6-4, at number three.  In the top-seeded contest, the Bulldogs' Roos van der Zwaan and Ellie Gerlach beat junior Katty Weymouth and senior Aryn Greene, 6-3.

The Paladins jumped out to a 3-0 lead with singles wins at flights two and four.  Weymouth scored a 6-2, 3-0 win when Holly Horsfall retired due to injury at flight two, and Vines topped Pool, 6-1, 6-1, at flight four.  Amanda Kilduff downed Rodriguez, 7-5, 6-2, at number six to cut the deficit to 3-1, but Greene clinched the win for Furman with a 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, victory over Gerlach at number three.

The teams split the remaining two matches, with Jennings scoring a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 advantage over Kerman at number five, and Paladin sophomore Katarina Kozarov defeating van der Zwaan, 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 at number one.

"We did not have our best week of preparation, and we got off to a really slow start in the doubles, but this team just keeps digging deep and finding ways in the big moments of matches," said Furman head coach Adam Herendeen.

"Samford is a well-coached team and they grabbed the momentum in both doubles and singles, but our girls did a great job to keep bouncing back.  It was neat to have both our seniors step up for us on senior day with Gabby clinching the doubles point and Aryn clinching the team match.  We will enjoy this one today and then we have a lot to work on before the SoCon tournament next Friday!"
