GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team picked up four singles wins and four doubles victories Friday in the opening day of the 32nd Annual Debbie Southern Fall Classic, being held this weekend at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
In singles action, freshman Julia Adams scored a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Clemson's Sydney Riley at flight six, while sophomore Georgie Walker beat Lex Franco of Wake Forest, 6-3, 6-2, at flight seven. At flight eight, sophomore Carol Elizabeth Kerman downed Alex Angyalosy of Clemson, 6-4, 6-2, and freshman Taylor Melville held on for a 7-6(4), 2-6, 7-5 victory over Valeriya Deminova of Georgia Tech.
Kerman and Melville tallied two wins at flight four doubles and will compete in the flight championship match on Saturday morning. The Paladin duo defeated North Carolina's Sophia Patel and Chloe Ouellet-Pizer, 8-5, then beat Alexis Franco and Saby Nihalani of Wake Forest, 8-5, in round two.
At flight two doubles, senior Katty Weymouth and junior Danni Vines downed Summer Dvorak and Emma Kurtz of Vanderbilt, 8-7(7-3), in second round action, and freshmen Eva Borders and Mary Hunter Hyche topped Clemson's Alex Angyalosy and Laura Marti, 8-2 at flight five's second round.
"We had a lot of strong results and played some really high level tennis today, which is nice for the team to see their hard work so far paying off," said Paladin head coach Adam Herendeen, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the Furman program. "This part of the year is all about developing though, and I think we learned some good lessons and saw some specific areas we need to continue to improve on as the tournament and fall go on."
Eleven teams competing in the tournament were ranked in the top 38 in the 2018 final ITA Collegiate Tennis rankings: Vanderbilt (2), North Carolina (3), Duke (4), Georgia Tech (5), Texas (6), South Carolina (12), Florida State (16), Wake Forest (27), Mississippi State (29), Ohio State (33), and Clemson (39). The tournament features singles draws of 32 men and 32 women, and a mixed doubles event with a 32-player draw. Players are chosen based upon conference representation, similar to the NCAA Tournament, with Kozarov representing the Southern Conference.
In Thursday's opening round, Sara Daavettila of North Carolina defeated Kozarov, 6-4, 6-2, then on Friday Kozarov beat Northern Kentucky's Margita Sunjic, 6-1, 6-2, in the first round of the consolation bracket.
