Adam Herendeen concluded his seventh season as the Paladins' women's tennis head coach in the spring of 2022. He has amassed a 219-86 career record and a 140-44 mark at the helm of the Furman program.
Furman finished the 2022 season with a 22-7 overall record and claimed the Southern Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament by capturing its 21st SoCon Championship. The Paladins ranked as high as 19th nationally, a program record, after defeating No. 26 Alabama and 24th-ranked Texas Tech at the prestigious Blue Gray Tournament. Furman, which made its 14th appearance in the NCAA tournament, was led by SoCon Player of the Year Julia Adams, who ranked 38th nationally.
Sara Snyder, who was ranked 65th nationally in the spring, earned SoCon Freshman of the Year accolades, and Snyder, Ellie Schulson, and Jess Dawson all earned spots on the SoCon All-Freshman team and the All-SoCon second team for singles. Adams was named to the All-SoCon first team for both singles and doubles. Adams competed at the NCAA individual championships in singles and teamed Ellie Schoppe to compete in the national doubles championship. The Paladin duo of Adams & Schcoppe was ranked as high as 23rd nationally during the spring season, while Madison Dillon and Schulson teamed up to rank 34th nationally.
The Paladins rewrote the record books during the spring of 2021, as Furman put together a 21-7 overall record and 7-0 SoCon mark with victories over Alabama, No. 16 Wake Forest, No. 18 South Carolina, Virginia Tech, and Clemson. The Paladins rose as high as 23rd in the ITA national rankings, marking the highest ranking in program history. Furman, which won the SoCon regular season championship, claimed its fourth-consecutive and 20th overall tournament championship and made its fourth-straight appearance in the NCAA Championships.
Two-time All-American Katarina Kozarov, who became only the third player in league history to win the SoCon Player of the Year award three times in a row and just the fourth player to earn the award on three or more occasions, spearheaded the storybook season by achieving a No. 7 national ranking in singles, while junior teammate Julia Adams ranked as high 77th in singles. Kozarov earned a top 16 seeding at the NCAA Singles Championship and was the only seeded player not from a Power 5 school. Kozarov and Adams, who combined to rank as high as 16th nationally in doubles — another program milestone -- claimed the program’s first doubles win at the NCAA Doubles Championship, defeating No. 11 ranked Ally Bojczuk and Julia Lilien of Notre Dame, 7-6(6), 6-3. Two other Furman doubles teams earned national rankings in 2021. Adams and junior Madison Dillon peaked at 18th, while Dillon teamed with senior MaryAnn Rompf for a 48th-place national ranking.
During the shortened 2020 season, Furman sported a 13-4 overall record and 1-0 SoCon mark and achieved a national ranking of 35th, the highest ranking in the history of the program. Katarina Kozarov became just the second All-American in Paladin women's tennis history and was named the 2020 Intercollegiate Tennis Association Division I Most Improved Senior and the ITA Carolina Region Most Improved Senior. She rose as high as 13th in the national singles rankings and scored four consecutive wins to reach the consolation finals of the ITA All-American Championship, clinching an automatic entry into the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships. Kozarov teamed with Julia Adams for a national ranking of 21st in doubles, while Adams and Madison Dillon were ranked as high as 23rd nationally.
In 2019, Furman posted a 26-2 overall mark and perfect 7-0 SoCon record and concluded the season ranked 55th nationally. The Paladins, which claimed their third-consecutive and 19th overall Southern Conference title in 2019, put together a 23-match winning streak, the longest in Furman history. Furman, which climbed as high as 40th in the national poll, secured the SoCon's automatic bid the NCAA Championships for the third-consecutive season and earned a No. 3 seed in the tournament for just the second time in program history.
The Paladins had individuals ranked in both the singles and doubles national polls during the 2019 season, including SoCon Player of the Year Katarina Kozarov, who was ranked 67th in the final poll, and the Furman doubles duo of Kozarov and SoCon Freshman of the Year Julia Adams, who rose as high as 40th in the rankings. Freshman Madison Dillon also earned a national singles ranking during the season. 2019 marked the fourth-straight year that a Furman player captured the SoCon Player of the Year award.
Under Herendeen's direction, the Paladins clinched their third-straight SoCon regular season championship in 2018. Furman, which notched a 20-9 overall record and 7-0 league mark, went on to claim the SoCon title and make its second-consecutive NCAA Championship appearance. Katarina Kozarov was honored as the SoCon Player of the Year, and the Paladins claimed seven All-SoCon honors.
The 2017 Southern Conference Coach of the Year, Herendeen led Furman to its first SoCon Championship since 2008 in only his second year at the helm of the program. The Paladins, who posted a 23-6 overall record and a perfect 7-0 SoCon mark, returned to the NCAA Championships for the tenth time after winning the program's 17th SoCon title. Ansley Speaks was named the SoCon Player of the Year for the third time in her career, while Danni Vines was honored as the conference freshman of the year, and Furman earned 10 All-SoCon awards.
In his first year at Furman, Herendeen was voted the 2016 Southern Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Paladins to a 15-9 overall record and a perfect 7-0 league mark. The Paladins won the SoCon regular season title, and Furman's Ansley Speaks was honored as the Southern Conference Player of the Year. Katty Weymouth earned Southern Conference Freshman of the Year accolades, and the Paladins captured eight All-SoCon citations.
Herendeen served as the head men's tennis coach at Presbyterian for four seasons before coming to Furman. During each of his last three season seasons, the Blue Hose registered 20 or more wins, becoming one of only nine Division I teams to accomplish the feat, and just one of two schools from non-Power 5 conferences to boast the accomplishment.
During his four years at Presbyterian, Herendeen compiled a 79-42 record. In 2015, the Blue Hose posted their third-straight 20-win season, recording a 20-9 overall record. Ben Kelley and Danny Bruce were named conference flight championships, while Big South All-Conference selections Joel Roberts and Kelley were also the No. 2 doubles flight champion. Freshman Alejandro Bejar set a new Presbyterian record for most singles wins in a season with 24.
Under Herendeen's tutelage, the men's tennis team captured Presbyterian's first Big South regular season championship in any sport during the 2014 season. Herendeen was honored as the Big South Conference Coach of the Year, while Grayson Mills earned Player of the Year accolades, and Diego Manzanas was named Freshman of the Year, marking the first time since 2008 that a Big South member swept the three major men's tennis awards. Herendeen helped the Blue Hose to a program-best 25 wins and the team's first-ever Division I ITA national ranking.
The Blue Hose recorded their second-consecutive Big South Conference Championships runner-up finish during the 2013 season. Presbyterian went 21-10 under Herendeen's leadership, setting a then-Blue Hose record for most wins in a season, and entered the Big South's postseason tournament as the No. 3 seed, the program's highest-ever Big South entry.
In his first season as head coach at Presbyterian, Herendeen helped the Blue Hose to the Big South Conference Championship match. Presbyterian became the first No. 7 seed to win a Big South tournament match, as the Blue Hose downed the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds en route to a runner-up finish.
Prior to his time as head coach at Presbyterian, Herendeen served as an assistant coach for both the Blue Hose men's and women's tennis programs for two years.
Herendeen, who is a certified professional by the Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), completed the USTA High Performance Coaching Certification in August 2016. He is a member of the ITA Division I Operating Committee and the chairman of the ITA Carolina Regional Committee.
A 2009 graduate of Presbyterian, Herendeen earned a bachelor's degree in religion. He was a four year letterwinner for the Blue Hose and was undefeated his first two seasons at Presbyterian. Herendeen completed a master's degree in coaching and athletic administration from Concordia at Irvine in 2015.
A native of Douglasville, Ga., Herendeen is married to the former Erin Booth of Clemson, S.C. The couple has two daughters, Anna and Grayson.
