Furman's Men's Tennis Team Captures Two Victories

Greenville, SC - After eight straight road matches which saw the Paladins face seven teams ranked in the top 75, the Paladins were very eager to return home Tuesday afternoon for a double header against Charlotte and Gardner-Webb. Furman responded with two victories on the day, improving their record at the Mickel Tennis Center to 4-1, and their overall record to 4-10. Charlotte fell to 7-6 with the 4-3 loss with Gardner-Webb slipping to 2-11 after a 7-0 defeat.

In the first match Furman rallied to a 4-3 victory over the 49ers of Charlotte. In doubles play Furman captured two of three matches jumping out to an early 1-0 lead. In singles action Furman quickly took a 3-0 lead when Andy Sobczyk eased by Stuart Lynas at No.5 6-1, 6-0 and Kevin Lackey downed Zvi Lantsberg 6-3, 6-4 at No.6. Charlotte closed the gap to 3-2 when Dorian Host defeated Stephen Nash 6-2, 3-6, 6-2 in flight three and at No.1 Roy Sichel won his match over Allen Simmons 6-4, 7-5. Ben Pauluhn then sealed the victory for the Paladins with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Marlo Santoso in flight two. In the final match at No.4 Charlotte's Johnathan Vencatachellum downed Brennen Phippen 6-4, 4-6, 7-6(6) to make the final score 4-3.

In the second match against Gardner-Webb Furman continued their great doubles play to take the 1-0 advantage. At No.1 Ben Pauluhn and Greg Maarschalk downed Taylor Ferrier and Kim Ellis 8-5 and in flight two Allen Simmons and Andy Sobczyk defeated Daniel Abrahao and Kern Phillip. In the flight three match Kevin Lackey teamed with Scott Kahler for an 8-2 victory over Brandon Boozer and Roberto Vasques. Furman went on to win all six singles matches in straight sets to capture the 7-0 win.

Furman returns to action Wednesday, March 16 for a 2:30 matchup against Army in Greenville, SC.
