Box Score GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team defeated Army, 6-1, Thursday afternoon at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C. The Paladins swept the doubles matches, then won five out of six singles matches for the team victory.
In doubles action, senior Sawyer Duncan and sophomore Andrew Mellow combined for an 8-3 victory over Tripp Johnson and Donald Van Velzer in the top match-up. At number two doubles, freshmen Joel Cook and Alex Christ defeated Gary Kushnirovich and Alex Holland, 8-3, then freshman Marco Aru and junior Watson George teamed up for an 8-7(5) win over Asika Isho and Henry Jang-Milsten in the third doubles match.
Duncan defeated Isoh, 6-3, 6-4, in the number one singles match, while Mellow beat Kushnirovich, 6-4, 4-6, 6-3, at number two singles. Senior Andrei Chvetsov posted a 6-2, 7-6 win over Van Velzer at number three singles, and sophomore Tyler Droll beat Jang-Milsten, 6-3, 7-6, in the fifth singles match. Cook notched a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Holland in the number six singles contest.
The Black Knights lone win came at number four singles, where Johnson defeated Christ, 7-6, 4-6, 1-0 (10-8).
Furman (3-12, 1-1 SoCon) will face #47 Cornell Monday at 3 p.m.
