WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Sophomores Julia Adams and Madison Dillon reached the semifinals of the main doubles draw to lead the Furman women's tennis team this weekend at the ITA Carolinas Regional Championships at the Wake Forest Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C. The tournament showcased the top women's tennis players from the states of North Carolina and South Carolina.
The Paladin duo blanked Elon's Alex Koniaev and Uma Nayar, 8-0, in the opening round of the main draw before defeating Anna Brylin and Sabhyata Nihalani of Wake Forest, 8-5, in the round of 32. In the round of 16, Adams and Dillon downed Meible Chi and Summer Devorak of Duke, 8-5, and in the quarterfinals, the Paladins beat third-ranked Makenna Jones and Cameron Morra of North Carolina, 8-3. Silvia Chinellato and Emma Shelton of South Carolina held off Furman, 3-6, 6-4, 11-9, in Sunday's semifinals.
Also in doubles, juniors Georgie Walker and MaryAnn Rompf topped UNC Greensboro's Sophia Adams and Ariana Chan, 8-4, then the Paladins held off Alli Despain and Mackenzy Middlebrooks of Clemson, 8-7(2).
In singles action, Adams defeated Clemson's Louka Eleni, 6-3, 6-3, in the opening round of the main singles draw, and Dillon won a consolation match, 6-0, 6-0, over Alex Koniaev of Elon, 6-0, 6-0.
The Paladins won three matches in the qualifying singles draw. Walker beat Coastal Carolina's Flaminia Scara, 7-6(3), 6-2, and freshman Maggie Pate defeated Samantha Nanere of Winthrop, 6-2, 6-4. Rompf held off Western Carolina's Jacy Smith, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3.
Furman will compete at the Furman Duals in Greenville, S.C., Nov. 1-2.
