GREENVILLE, S.C. -- FCS 15th/17th-ranked Furman closes out its 2019 regular season this Saturday when it plays host to Point in a 1:00 p.m. ESPN+ broadcast contest at Paladin Stadium.
The Paladins (7-4, 6-2 SoCon), a victory shy of registering the program's highest regular season win total since 2006, are currently in second place in the Southern Conference standings, a half game behind Wofford (7-3, 6-1 SoCon), which plays at The Citadel on Saturday. Â Furman can claim a share of the SoCon title if the Terriers stumble against the Bulldogs, as could Chattanooga (6-5, 5-2 SoCon), which plays at VMI on Saturday.
The Paladins will await the NCAA Division 1 Championship Playoff Selection Show, scheduled for Sunday at 12:30 p.m. on ESPNU, to see if their 2019 campaign will continue.
The clash with NAIA member Point, the first between the two schools, is a result of Furman's desire to play a 12th game this season, an option that proved difficult to fulfill after the Paladins drew a bye in the final week of this year's SoCon schedule. Â A game versus an NCAA Divison II foe was impossible due to the start of that division's playoff schedule this Saturday, leaving Furman to search for contest among a very limited field of schools.
Point, coached by former Paladin standout cornerback and longtime Furman assistant coach Julius Dixon, answered the call to play, providing the Paladins' first non-NCAA Division I foe since the 2008 season. Â Dixon, a captain of Furman's 1988 NCAA I-AA (FCS) championship team who coached alongside current Paladin head coach
Clay Hendrix for 13 seasons (1994-06), brings his Skyhawks team to Greenville with a 5-6 record.
Furman will look to break out offensively versus Point after being hemmed in by Wofford, which checked the Paladins for seven points and just 265 total yards, a season low against FCS opposition this fall.
Junior
Devin Wynn became the first Paladin running back since Hank McCloud in 2013 to rush 1,000 yards when he topped the plateau against Wofford. Â Currently with 1,038 yards, the Greensboro, Ga., native will look for a big day against Point, as will senior wide receiver
Thomas Gordon, who enters Saturday's contest just 17 yards shy of setting a new Furman career receiving yards standard.
The Paladins continue to pace the SoCon in scoring defense (19.8 ppg) and have proven to be especially tough in the second half of league games, posting four shutouts along the way.
Senior spur
Jordan Willis (76 tackles, 4.5 TFL) leads Furman's defense, followed by inside linebackers
Braden Gilby (64 tackles),
Elijah McKoy (60 tackles), and Donvan Perryman (58 tackles).Â
