Furman's Adams Sets 3,000m Program Record At Dr. Sander Invitational Saturday

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Furman senior Ryan Adams posted a time of 7:49.45 in the 3,000m Invitational Saturday, setting a new Paladin indoor track and field record at the Dr. Sander Invitational/Columbia Challenge at the Armory Track in New York City.

Adams placed second by just .34 seconds in an elite field, which featured nine professional runners and only three collegiate athletes, and knocked 15 seconds off the previous Furman record of 8:00.07, which was set by Troy Reeder in 2017.  He leads the nation in the event this season.

"Ryan had an excellent race today," said Furman head coach Robert Gary.  "He set a school record and has the number one 3,000m time in the NCAA right now.  We are excited to have some down time and start specific preparations for the championship season."

A native of Hudson, Ohio, Adams, the reigning Southern Conference cross country runner of the year, posted a time of 3:57.66 in the mile last weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational.  His time, which ranks second in the nation this season, established a new Furman indoor record.

Senior Aaron Wier, who hails from Versailles, Ky., also competed in the 3,000m Invitational Saturday, where he shaved 15 seconds off his personal best with a time of 8:08.28, good for 12th place both at the meet and nationally. He ranks 18th nationally in the mile after crossing the line in 4:02.83 last weekend at the Vanderbilt Invitational.

Furman will compete at the Carolina Challenge Jan. 31- Feb. 1 in Columbia, S.C.
