Durham, N.C. – Carson Sorrells and
Tucker Brown each scored two goals, while
Anders Erickson dished out three assists, as the Furman men's lacrosse team opened its 2020 season on Saturday morning with a 16-9 loss to the Bucknell Bison at Duke's Koskinen Stadium.
Furman drops to 0-1 on the season while Bucknell improves to 1-0 overall.
"Obviously it isn't what we thought was going to happen," said head coach
Richie Meade. "I think we had a really bad first quarter. I don't know why that was. That put us behind the eight ball. We went into halftime down 10-1, which usually doesn't happen, and that wasn't our expectation. But I was impressed with the way we stuck together as a team and how we played in the second half. That was encouraging."
Erickson led the Paladins offensively with four points on one goal and three assists. Sorrells added three points on two goals and one assist. Brown was one of four players to finish with two points.
Austin Leonard,
Chad Kreuzer,
Brett Tenaglia and
Jack Dowd also scored one goal apiece. In goal,
Alec Van de Bovenkamp grabbed 18 saves.
Will Yorke recorded five goals to help lead the Bison while Alston Tarry tallied six points on two goals and four assists. Harry Wellford added three goals and Tommy Sopko two. Goalie Ben Clark registered six saves.
Yorke scored four of his five goals in the first quarter, including four straight in just over four minutes, as Bucknell built a 7-1 lead over Furman. Kreuzer logged the Paladins' first goal of the season at the 6:46 mark to make the score 3-1. The Bison closed out the quarter on a 4-0 run.
Bucknell continued its run into the second quarter, scoring all three goals to increase its lead out to 10-1. Following Wellford's goal with 3:34 left before halftime, Furman held the Bison scoreless.
The Paladins outscored Bucknell 8-6 in the second half highlighted by a 5-2 mark in the fourth quarter.
Furman scored three of the first five goals over the first four minutes of play to begin the second half. Erickson, Brown and Sorrells each contributed a goal during that stretch. Sorrells' goal with 6:29 left put the score at 12-4. Brendan Egan and Grayson Burns posted back-to-back goals for the Bison in the final 3:58 to give them a 14-4 lead.
The Paladins opened the fourth quarter by scoring the first three goals from Brown, Sorrells and Leonard. Leonard's goal with 10:58 to go cut Furman's deficit down to 14-7. The teams traded the final four goals to make the final score 16-9. Dowd and Tenaglia recorded the final two goals for the Paladins.
Furman concluded the game with 28 shots, 24 ground balls and forced Bucknell into 14 turnovers.
The Paladins host Hampton in their home opener on Saturday, February 8 at 12 p.m.
