Durham, N.C. – Anders Erickson and
Carson Sorrells each scored two goals on Sunday afternoon as the Furman men's lacrosse team dropped a 19-6 decision to the 13
th-ranked Duke Blue Devils from Koskinen Stadium.
Furman drops to 1-4 overall while Duke improves to 4-2 on the season.
"I thought that we played really hard the whole game," said head coach
Richie Meade. "Right now, what we are focusing on is improvement. We just have to keep working and that will be the key to our season."
Erickson and Sorrells both led the Paladins offensively with two goals apiece while
Brett Tenaglia and
Tucker Brown both scored once. Tenaglia added one assist along with
Chad Kreuzer,
Keegan Pearl and
Luke Majick.
Brady Stoll and
Cole Horan picked up four ground balls. Tenaglia,
Alex Byron and
Zack Siegel all caused one turnover. In goal,
Alec Van de Bovenkamp recorded 11 saves while
Andrew Jenet added four.
Dyson Williams scored a game-high four goals for the Blue Devils while Joey Manown and Sean Lowrie contributed two apiece. JP Basile dished out three assists to lead all players. Reilly Walsh tallied two assists. Andrew Bonafede earned the win in goal after recording five saves.
Duke scored the game's first seven goals and held a 7-0 lead less than three minutes into the second quarter. Erickson got Furman on the board with his first goal of the game at the 6:25 mark to trim its deficit down to 7-1. The Blue Devils closed out the half on a 3-0 run and led 10-1 at intermission.
Duke continued its run into the second half, scoring back-to-back goals during the first 3:23 and built a 12-1 lead. Erickson picked up his second goal with 10:26 remaining and put the score at 12-2. The Blue Devils ended the third quarter scoring five of six goals to go ahead 17-3. Tenaglia scored with 2:07 left.
The Paladins outscored Duke 3-2 in the fourth quarter with Sorrells compiling two of the goals. Brown made the score 18-4 at the 13:14 mark and Sorrells followed with two straight goals over a span of 1:06. Sorrells' last goal came with 6:16 left. The Blue Devils scored the game's final goal with 25 seconds remaining.
Furman concluded the game with 26 shots and 22 ground balls while forcing Duke into 14 turnovers. The Paladins held a 15-6 advantage in saves.
Furman is back at home on Friday, March 6 to host fourth-ranked North Carolina at 6 p.m.
