Greenville, S.C. – Tucker Brown recorded a hat trick, while
Brett Tenaglia dished out three assists, as the Furman men's lacrosse team fell 22-7 to the seventh-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions on Tuesday evening at Paladin Stadium.
Furman drops to 1-6 on the season while Penn State improves to 5-2 overall.
"Our goal tonight was to come out and establish the lead and we just couldn't do it," said head coach
Richie Meade. "I'm just impressed with our guys. We keep on battling. This was the third ranked team we have played in a row. I think we have improved. Games like this really help you. I was really happy with our extra-man offense tonight, going 2-for-2. We did what we were coached to do and it was successful for us. The most impressive thing from my standpoint, as a coach, was that out guys battled."
Brown and Tenaglia both led the Paladins offensively with three points apiece. Brown recorded his first career hat trick while Tenaglia dished out a career-high three assists.
Anders Erickson and
Jack Dowd both contributed two points on one goal and one assist.
Austin Leonard and
Keegan Pearl each collected one goal.
Jack Schleicher,
McCain Wnek and
Zack Siegel each picked up three ground balls.
Cole Horan caused a team-high three turnovers. In goal,
Alec Van de Bovenkamp made 13 saves and
Andrew Jenet added one.
TJ Malone and Joe White both had a team-high six points for the Nittany Lions. Malone compiled five goals and one assist while White posted four goals and two assists. Grant Ament tallied three assists. Gerard Arceri picked up 19 ground balls and Tommy Wright caused two turnovers. Colby Kneese earned the win in goal after registering six saves.
Penn State opened the game on a 7-0 run covering most of the first quarter. Malone scored three of the goals for the Nittany Lions and gave them a seven-goal lead with 18 seconds remaining. Leonard got Furman on the board just before the end of the period scoring with one second left, off the assist from Dowd, to make the score 7-1.
Brown added his first goal of the contest less than three minutes into the second quarter and cut the Paladins' deficit down to 7-2. Penn State then scored six consecutive goals and held a 13-2 advantage at the 6:24 mark. Brown added his second goal with 5:15 left as Furman trailed 13-3. The Nittany Lions picked up the final two goals of the half to lead 15-3 at intermission.
The teams exchanged all seven goals during the third quarter with Dowd, Pearl and Erickson scoring for the Paladins. After Penn State scored less than three minutes into the second half, Furman would hold it scoreless for a total of 9:03. Dowd scored during that stretch as the Paladins were down 16-4. Pearl posted a goal at the 2:45 mark and Erickson with 41 seconds remaining. The Nittany Lions added a goal with 10 seconds to go and led 19-6 heading to the fourth quarter.
Penn State recorded the first three goals of the final period and held a 22-6 advantage with 5:43 remaining. Brown completed his hat trick with 2:40 to go and put the final score at 22-7.
Furman concluded the game with 36 shots and picked up 33 ground balls. The Paladins held a 14-13 lead in saves and forced the Nittany Lions into 20 turnovers, their second-most of the season.
Furman begins conference play on Saturday, March 14 with a 1 p.m. EST matchup at Air Force.
