SANTA CLARA, CALIF. -- No. 35 Furman opened its spring break trip with a 6-1 victory at Santa Clara on Sunday in Santa Clara, Calif.
The Paladins won two of three doubles matches to claim point one. Senior Katarina Kozarov and sophomore Julia Adams, who rank 36th nationally, defeated Maddie Pothoff and Katya Tabachnik, 6-2, at flight one, and juniors Georgie Walker and MaryAnn Rompf topped Caitlyn Frankel and Jamie Schroer, 6-3, at number three. The flight two match was unfinished, with sophomore Madison Dillon and senior Danni Vines leading Elvena Gevargiz and Madison Clarke, 5-4.
Furman picked up five singles wins for the team victory. Kozarov, who ranks 16th nationally, held off Pothoff, 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) in the top-seeded match up, and Adams won 6-5 over Clarke when the flight two contest was retired. At flight four, Dillon blew past Schroer, 6-1, 6-1, and at number five, Walker recorded a 6-2, 6-2 advantage versus Tabachnik. Freshman Maggie Pate entered the lineup at flight six, where she defeated Frankel, 7-5, 6-2.
Gevargiz came from behind for a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (11-9) win against Rompf at flight three to put Santa Clara (4-5) on the board.Â
Furman (13-3, 1-0 SoCon) will play at St. Mary's on Wednesday at 5 p.m. as part of a double header with the Paladin men's team.Â
