KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Sophomore Anna Morgan (+6) fired a one-under 71 in the second round to lead Furman in the Paladins' season opener Sunday at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 72, 6,021 yard Turtle Point course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C.
Morgan, a native of Spartanburg, S.C., teed off of No. 10 and birdied No 11 to turn at 1-under. After adding a second birdie on No. 2, she scored a bogey on No. 3 then parred the remaining holes to finish the second round with a 1-under 71. In the day's opening round, she recorded a 76 with a birdie on No. 5. She enters Monday's round tied for 13th, six shots back of leader Dorthea Forbrigd (E) of East Carolina, who tallied rounds of 71-73=144 on Sunday.
Junior Sarah-Eve Rhéaume (+9) is tied for 23rd after posting a 76 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 7 in the morning round and adding a 77 with birdies on No. 9 and No. 15 in round two. Senior Madison Moosa (+11), who is tied for 30th after two rounds, scored an opening-round 75 with three birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 4 and No. 5. She recorded an 80 with a birdie on No. 5 in the afternoon round.
Sophomore Caroline Wrigley (+11) is also tied for 30th after Sunday's play. She notched a 75 with birdies on No. 12 and No. 15 in round one and added an 80 with birdies on No. 3 and No. 17 in round two. Senior Carly Burkhardt (+20) scored a 78 with a team-high four birdies, including back to back birdies on No. 15 and No. 16, in round one and notched an 86 in the day's second round.Â
Senior Caitlin Cotterill (+11), who is playing as an individual, posted a 78 with a birdie on No. 9 in round one and scored a 77 in round two.
Seventh-ranked Wake Forest (+11) holds a 16-stroke lead over East Carolina (+27) heading into Monday's final round. Duke (+32) and No. 5 Virginia (+32) are tied for third, while College of Charleston (+33) and No. 37 Clemson (+33) are tied for fifth. No. 19 Virginia Tech (+35) is in seventh place, just one stroke ahead of the Paladins (+36). Â
Play was suspended in the second round due to darkness. Players from College of Charleston, North Carolina, and Indiana will resume their rounds tomorrow morning at 8 a.m.
The 54-hole tournament will conclude beginning at 8:30 a.m. on Monday. Furman will tee off of No. 10 and will play in a group with Virginia Tech. Live tournament scoring will be available via http://www.golfstat.com.
