Morgan Places Eighth To Lead Furman To Fifth-Place Finish At Palmetto Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Sophomore Anna Morgan (+8) tied for eighth to lead the Furman women's golf team to a fifth-place finish Monday at the Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 72, 6,021 yard Turtle Point course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort on Kiawah Island, S.C.

A native of Spartanburg, S.C., Morgan entered the final round in a tie for 13th and birdied two of her first three holes, No. 11 and No. 13, then added a birdie on No. 2 to finish with a 2-over 74.  She concluded the tournament eight strokes back of individual medalist Rachel Kuehn (E) of Wake Forest, who fired a final-round 69 to finish with a three-round total of 73-74-69=216.  

Furman (+45) moved up three spots on the final day to finish the tournament in fifth place after concluding Sunday's rounds in eighth.  No. 7 Wake Forest (+10) won the tournament by 28 strokes over fifth-ranked Virginia, with Duke (+39) finishing third, and No. 37 Clemson (+40) in fourth.  The Paladins scored wins over No. 19 Virginia Tech (+46), East Carolina (+54), College of Charleston (+60), No. 41 North Carolina (+75), N.C. State (+78), and Indiana (+103). 

All told, the Paladins recorded 16 birdies, including four on No. 5, and an eagle on No. 5 during Monday's round.

Junior Sarah-Eve Rhéaume (+10) and senior Madison Moosa (+12) each tallied a final-round 73.  Rhéaume scored birdies on No. 5, No. 12, and No. 17 to tie for 13th, while Moosa, who eagled the par-5 No. 5, tied for 20th after also birdieing No. 9.

Sophomore Caroline Wrigley (+19) and senior Caitlin Cotterill (+10) tied for 35th.  Wrigley birdied No. 5 and No. 10 to post a final-round 80, while Cotterill, who played as an individual, added birdies on No. 5, No. 14, and No. 18, also scoring an 80 on Monday.  Senior Carly Burkhardt (+25) paced the Paladins with four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 15 and No. 16 in the final round.  She tied for 48th after recording a 77.

Furman will compete at the Gamecock Intercollegiate in Columbia, S.C., March 1-3.
