INDEPENDENCE, MINN. -- Junior Ross Funderburke (-2) sits in a tie for 12th to lead the Furman men's golf team after Sunday's two rounds in the opening day of the Gopher Invitational at the par 71, 7,359 yard Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn. Â
A native of Roanoke, Va., Funderburke fired a 69 with three birdies on the back nine in round one then added a 71 with a team-high five birdies in the day's second round. He is three strokes back of Bradley Smithson (-5) of Michigan State and Luke Kluver (-5) of Kansas, who are tied for the individual lead with a two-round score of 137. Â
Senior Jack Crosby (+1) carded an even 71 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 12 in the morning round then scored a 72 with a birdie on No. 12 to finish the day in a tie for 27th. Junior Walker Crosby (+8) and sophomore Mac Scott (+8) are tied for 55th heading into Monday's final round. Crosby tallied a 76 with two birdies in round one and carded a 74 with three birdies in round two, while Scott shot a 75 with two birdies in the morning round and a 75 with an eagle on the par-4 No. 13 and two birdies in the evening round.
Junior Sam Lape (+12) is in 68th place after tallying a 79 with consecutive birdies on No. 3 and No. 4 in round one and adding a 75 in round two.Â
Kansas (-11) holds a three-stroke lead over Michigan State (-8) after two rounds of play. Notre Dame (-5) sits in third place, followed by Kent State (-3) in fourth. West Virginia (+3) completes the top five. The Paladins (+15) are in 13th place entering Monday's final round.
