INDEPENDENCE, MINN. -- Senior Jack Crosby (-4) fired a final-round 66 to tie for eighth Monday, leading the Furman men's golf team at the Gopher Invitational at the par 71, 7,359 yard Windsong Farm Golf Club in Independence, Minn.
A native of Memphis, Tenn., Crosby teed off of No. 10 and eagled the par-5 No. 12 then birdied six of seven holes from No. 17 around to number six, including four-consecutive birdies on No. 3 through No. 6. He finished the tournament six strokes back of individual medalist Luke Kluver (-10) of Kansas, who won the title with rounds of 67-70-66=203.
Junior Ross Funderburke (E) tied for 18th after shooting a 73 with birdies on No. 12 and No. 14 on Monday, while sophomore Mac Scott (+12) finished in a tie for 50th with a 75 in Monday's round. He scored birdies on No. 1 and No. 12.
Juniors Walker Crosby (+14) and Sam Lape (+14) tied for 56th. Crosby carded a 77 with three birdies in the final round, while Lape added a 73 with three birdies on Monday.
Furman placed fourth among the field in par-4 scoring with a 4.13 average. The Paladins were fifth in the field with 165 pars and third with two eagles.
Kansas (-14) and Notre Dame (+14) finished in a tie for the team victory, nine strokes ahead of third-place Michigan State (-5). Kent State (-3) was fourth, and Arkansas State (+9) completed the top five. The Paladins (+18) finished in ninth place, ahead of former SoCon foe Georgia Southern (+19), who placed tenth. Furman also beat out Miami (OH), plus Power 5 opponents Minnesota, Iowa, and Rutgers.
Furman will compete at the Battle at Briar's Creek on Johns Island, S.C., Sept 20-21.
