SAPPHIRE, N.C. -- Junior Ross Funderburke (-2) tied for 18th to pace the Furman (+6) men's golf team Tuesday in the final round of the JT Poston Invitational, hosted by Western Carolina at the par 71, 7,007 yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley in Sapphire, N.C.
A native of Roanoke, Va., Funderburke scored a final-round 74 with three consecutive birdies on No. 12 through No. 14. He finished eight strokes back of individual medalist Braedon Wear (-10) of Chattanooga, who won the title by two strokes with a three-round total of 66-66-71=203.
Sophomore Mac Scott (+1) finished in a tie for 28th after scoring a 72 with birdies on No. 2 and No. 5 on Tuesday, while senior Jack Crosby (+5) led the Paladins with a 70 in the final round, tying for 46th, after eagling the par-5 No. 6 and scoring three birdies, including back to back birdies on No. 13 and No. 14.
Freshman Trey Diehl (+8) carded a 75 with three birdies in the final round to tie for 60th, and junior Walker Crosby (+9) tied for 64th after tallying a 76 with three birdies on Tuesday. Sophomore Demi Di Matteo (+27), who played as an individual, recorded an 83 with a birdie on No. 6, tying for 85th.
South Carolina (-19) won the team title by two strokes over Middle Tennessee State (-17). Chattanooga (-15) was third. Furman (+6) finished tenth, ahead of multiple teams, including UNCW (+8) and SoCon foe Mercer (+8).
The Paladins will compete at the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate, hosted by East Tennessee State, in Jonesborough, Tenn., Oct. 10-12.
