GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Sophomore Will Morlan (-7) is in second place, while the Paladin men's golf team (E) is in third after two rounds of play Saturday at the 52nd Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par 71, 7,005-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
Morlan, a native of Alpharetta, Ga., teed off on No. 1 and birdied four out of five holes from No. 2 through No. 6 in round one, turning at 3-under, then added four more birdies on the back to finish with a 6-under 65 and a team-high eight birdies. In round two, he opened with consecutive birdies on No. 1 and No. 2 and added a final birdie on No. 18 to card a 1-under 70. Morlan, who recorded his 10th and 11th rounds of the season under par on Saturday, enters Sunday's final round one stroke back of leader Daniel Cheng of James Madison (-8) who carded rounds of 68-66=134.
Furman, which ranks 49th nationally, is three strokes behind leader Chattanooga (-3) and just one shot off of James Madison (-1), who is in second place after two rounds. The Paladins will tee off of No. 1 beginning at 9:50 a.m. Sunday in the final round of the 54-hole tournament. Furman will be paired with Chattanooga and James Madison as the teams battle it out in the final 18 holes.
Freshman Zach Frazer (-1), who is playing as an individual, sits in third place following Saturday's rounds. He carded a 70 with four birdies in round one then birdied five of his last six holes, including four-straight birdies to end the round, to fire a 66 in round two. Junior Mac Scott, who is also playing as an individual, is tied for sixth after shooting a 71 in round one and a 67 in the second round. He birdied three of his first five holes in round one then eagled the par-5 No. 5 and added a final birdie on No. 15 in the first round. He followed that performance with five birdies and just one bogey in the day's second round. Senior Ross Funderburke (E) shot an even 71 with four birdies in each round to tie for 14th. He posted consecutive birdies on No. 10 and No. 11 in round one then added two birdies on each side in round two. Senior Walker Crosby (+5) and sophomore Trey Diehl (+5) are tied for 39th after two rounds. Crosby carded a 71 with three birdies in four holes from No. 2 through No. 5 in round one then eagled the par-5 No. 2 and added birdies on No. 3 and No. 18 to finish with a 76 in the afternoon. Diehl tallied a 76 with three birdies in round one and notched six birdies, including three-straight from No. 9 through No. 11, for a second-round 71. Senior Sam Lape (+7) enters the final round tied for 50th. He recorded a 76 with birdies on No. 4 and No. 15 in round one and shot a 73 with birdies on No. 9 and No. 12 in round two.Â
Other Paladins competing as individuals include freshman Clark Akers, who is tied for 23rd after posting rounds of 71 and 73 with six birdies on the day, along with senior Reynolds Lambert (77/75/T69th), junior David Dickey (77/78/T78th), and junior Demi Di Matteo (81/79/T81st).
