GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Sophomore Will Morlan (-9) fired a final-round 69 to tie for co-champion and help the Furman men's golf team (+4) to a fourth-place finish as the Paladins concluded the fall season Sunday at the 52nd Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par 71, 7,005-yard Furman University Golf Course in Greenville, S.C.
A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Morlan teed off on No. 1 and birdied two of his first three holes to turn at one under. He added additional birdies on No. 11 and No. 12 before bogeying No. 13 and No. 14. He rebounded with a birdie on No. 15 then parred out the final three holes to tie for co-champion with Daniel Cheng (-9) of James Madison. The duo each posted a three-round total of 204 to take a two-stroke victory.Â
Freshman Zach Frazer (-3) and junior Mac Scott (-3), who played as individuals, tied for eighth. Scott carded a 1-over 72 with birdies on No. 15 and No. 18, while Frazer scored a 74 with birdies on No. 2 and No. 11 in Sunday's final round.Â
Senior Ross Funderburke (+3) carded a 74 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 12 to tie for 22nd, while senior Sam Lape (+7) tied for 36th after shooting an even 71 with three birdies on Sunday. Senior Walker Crosby (+8) and sophomore Trey Diehl (+8) tied for 48th after each recorded a 74 in the final round. Crosby notched three birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 2 and No. 3, while Diehl also added three birdies. Â
Other Paladins competing as individuals included freshman Clark Akers, who tied for 36th after carding a 76 on Sunday, along with senior Reynolds Lambert (80/75th), junior David Dickey (82/T80th), and junior Demi Di Matteo (76/79th).
Furman, which ranks 49th nationally, ranked second with a 4.12 stroke average on the par 4s and finished third with 53 birdies.Â
Chattanooga (-14) smoked the field with a 273 on Sunday to win by 14 strokes over Davidson (E) and James Madison (E), who tied for second. The Paladins (+4) took fourth place, while Virginia Tech (+5) finished fifth. Â
Furman will open the 2023 spring season Feb. 5-6 at the John Hayt Collegiate Invitational in Jacksonville, Fla.
