Furman Prepares For High Stakes Showdown Saturday At Mercer

Paladins, Bears Both 7-2 Overall, 5-1 In SoCon

Tyler Huff 22-yard TD run vs. Chattanooga
GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Winners of four straight games and riding its recent surge in a pair of FCS Top 25 polls, Furman returns to action off its bye-week to face Mercer in a key Southern Conference showdown this Saturday in Macon, Ga.

Kickoff for the ESPN+ live streamed, Nexstar Network televised contest that carries with it likely league championship and playoff implications, is set for 3:00 p.m. at Five Star Stadium.

The Paladins (7-2, 5-1 SoCon), ranked 13th/16th in this week's Stats Perform and AFCA FCS Polls, respectively, will look to maintain their run of success that last featured a 24-20 triumph over Chattanooga two weeks ago in Greenville.  The Bears (7-2, 5-1 SoCon) also boast national credentials and head into Saturday's showdown ranked 14th/11th in both polls.  In a rare season scheduling quirk, Mercer, like Furman, was also idle last week following its 55-14 thrashing of VMI on Oct. 29.

Mercer has won the last two meetings, including a 24-3 triumph last year in Greenville, but Furman owns a 10-8-2 advantage in the series that was reignited in 2014 when the Bears resumed football following a multi-decade hiatus.

A repeat of the performance registered in the win over Chattanooga, at the time ranked sixth in FCS, would be nice for head coach Clay Hendrix, whose squad has combined impressive offensive balance with an opportunistic defense and effective special teams play this fall.

The work of quarterback Tyler Huff versus Chattanooga proved decisive as the graduate transfer, in his first season with the Paladins, made big plays with both his throwing arm (16x25, 203 yds., TD) and feet (20 rushes, 132 yds., TD) to frustrate the Mocs' highly regarded defense.

Huff, who some people forget was injured and did not play in Furman's 34-27 loss to current SoCon front runner Samford on Oct. 1, has thrown for 1,296 yards and 10 touchdowns, in addition to running for 418 yards and two scores this fall.

In terms of effectiveness, Furman's signal caller has plenty of company on offense, specifically the abilities of running back Dominic Roberto, All-America tight end Ryan Miller, wide receivers Kyndel Dean and Joshua Harris, and a veteran offensive front.

Roberto has run for 1,323 yards (7.0 ypc) and 13 touchdowns over his last 12 games, highlighted by a career best 252-yard outing in a win over Western Carolina on Oct. 15, for which he was named FCS national player of the week.

Miller continues to etch his name into Furman's record book and heads into Saturday's contest ranked sixth all-time in both receptions (132) and receiving yards (1,963).  He has 25 career touchdown catches, including 12 in his last 12 games, leaving him just one shy of Furman's standard of 26 currently held by Chas Fox (1982-85).

Dean and Harris have combined to elevate the Paladins' passing game this fall, evidenced by their 64 catches for 650 yards.

Helping make it all possible is a veteran Furman offensive front that boasts a combined total of 116 starts.  The leaders there are All-SoCon tackles Anderson Tomlin and Pearson Toomey.

Furman has made its way this season with a rather blue collar defense that has shown a penchant for making big plays.  The Paladins rank second nationally in interceptions (14) and third in turnovers gained (21), and dot the top 20 statistically in a number of other categories, most notably scoring defense (19.4/14th) and third down percentage defense (32.6/14th).

Attempting to keep Mercer's high-powered offense in check will start with a defensive front headed up by All-SoCon nose guard Cameron Coleman (20 tackles, 4 TFL) and tackle Matt Sochovka (18 tackles, 3.5 TFL). As they have done all year, the Paladins will heavily rotate its front personnel.

The linebacking corps is paced by Braden Gilby and Bryce McCormick, who lead the squad with 59 and 52 tackles, respectively.  Gilby, a senior, tops the unit with 10.5 tackles for-loss and is tied for the squad lead with three sacks. Furman's 17 sacks have been dispersed among 11 players.

The most interesting challenge on Saturday will likely fall on Furman's secondary versus Mercer's highly efficient passing game.  The Paladins boast excellent depth at cornerback, led by All-SoCon performer Travis Blackshear (nine career INTs), and at free safety, where Hugh Ryan has elevated his play.  The Irmo, S.C., product, who was named SoCon Defensive Player of the Month for October, has twice earned league defensive player of the week honors this fall on the strength of 50 tackles and a squad leading four interceptions.

Of note beyond Furman's 14 interceptions are the 39 pass breakups the Paladins own in 2022 — the highest tally by the program since 2005.

Furman special teams have been a strength this fall.  The Paladins' six blocked kicks, including three by Sochovka, have played key roles in wins.  Furman has also gotten solid work in the kicking department, as Axel Lepvreau and Ian Williams have combined to connect on 13-of-16 field goal attempts.  In addition, Williams' 36 kickoff touchbacks leads the SoCon.

Any Mercer kickoff that falls well short of the goal line will likely bring Wayne Anderson, Jr., into the picture.  Anderson ranks 10th nationally in kickoff returns (27.9 avg.) and owns a 97-yard runback for a touchdown against Western Carolina.
