STATESBORO, GA. – Senior Jack Crosby (+1) tied for 23rd to lead the Furman men's golf team (+8) to a ninth-place finish Sunday at the 42nd Schenkel Invitational at the par 70, 7,123-yard Forest Heights Country Club in Statesboro, Ga.
Walker, a native of Memphis, Tenn., birdied No. 5 and No. 7 and then added consecutive birdies on No. 17 and No. 18 to finish the day with a 75. Junior Sam Lape (+2) paced the Paladins with a 74 on Sunday, posting four birdies, including birdies on three of four holes from No. 9 to No. 12, to tie for 31st. Junior Walker Crosby (+2) also tied for 31st after carding a 76 with three birdies in the tournament's final round.
Junior Ross Funderburke (+7) and freshman Will Morlan (+7) tied for 55th. Morlan scored a 75 with three birdies on Sunday, while Funderburke recorded a 77 with birdies on No. 2 and No. 7.
Tournament host Georgia Southern (-25) won the tournament by seven strokes over No. 17 Notre Dame (-18). College of Charleston (-14) was third, followed by Kentucky (-9) in fourth and UAB (-3) in fifth. The Paladins finished ahead of Power 5 opponents Virginia Tech (+13) and Wisconsin (+17). Charleston's Kieron van Wyk (-12) won individual medalist honors with rounds of 66-68-70=204.
Furman will compete at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C., March 27-29.
