AWENDAW, S.C. – Junior Ross Funderburke (-10) fired a final-round 70 Tuesday to finish as runner-up and lead the Furman (-4) men's golf team at the 17th Hootie at Bulls Bay at the par 72, 7,248 yard Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
A native of Roanoke, Va., teed off on No. 10 and birdied No. 13 to turn at 1-over. After parring No. 1, he birdied four of his next five holes, with three-straight birdies from No. 2 through No. 4. Funderburke finished two strokes back of champion Archie Davies (-12) of ETSU, who recorded a 65 Tuesday to surge into the lead.
Senior Jack Crosby (-2) finished in a tie for 21st. He recorded a 75 on Tuesday with two birdies on the front and one on the back, while junior Walker Crosby (+4) tied for 59th after scoring a 73 with a birdie on No. 4 in the final round.
Senior Owen Burden (+7) carded a 74 with three birdies on the front and one on the back to tie for 71st, and junior Sam Lape (+9) tie for 78th after posting a 77 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 16. Junior Reynolds Lambert (+12), who played as an individual, notched a 76 with three birdies to tie for 87th.
Four teams tied for first: tournament co-host South Carolina (-20) which ranks 29th, No. 35 N.C. State (-20), Missouri (-20), and No. 28 ETSU (-20), with South Carolina and ETSU being deemed co-champions after three playoff holes. Furman (-4) finished in 11th place, ahead of Power 5 teams Purdue (-3), West Virginia (-1), and Iowa State (+20).
Furman will play at the Augusta Haskins Award Invitational Saturday and Sunday in Augusta, Ga.
