AIKEN, S.C. -- Walker Crosby (+5) fired a final-round 68 to tie for 20th to lead the Furman men's golf team to a seventh-place finish Tuesday at the 25th Annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 70, 6,617 yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
A junior from Memphis, Tenn., Crosby opened the shotgun round on No. 13, where he birdied his first hole then eagled the part-5 No. 4. He turned at three under and added an additional birdie on No. 1 to finish the day 2-under. Â
Walker's brother, Jack Crosby (+6), tied for 22nd after carding a 69 with four birdies on Monday, and junior Ross Funderburke (+9) shot a 72 with a birdie on No. 13 to tie for 34th. Freshman Will Morlan led the Paladins with six birdies on Monday after posting birdies on four of his first five holes. His final-round 70 left him in a tie for 45th. Senior Owen Burden (+16). tied for 60th with a 73 with two birdies in the final round. Â
The Paladins' 279 on Monday was the team's second-best round of the season. Furman was fifth with 43 birdies over the 54-hole tournament while tying for the lead with two eagles.
No. 43 South Carolina (-8) won the tournament by ten strokes over Virginia (+2). VCU (+12) was third, followed by host USC Aiken (+16). Furman (+29) finished seventh in the 15-team field.
Furman and Mercer will play Wednesday at Sage Valley Golf Club in Graniteville, S.C.
