GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No. 35 Furman rolled past Chattanooga, 6-1, Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
The Paladins won two of three doubles matches to take the first point. Senior Julia Adams and sophomore Ellie Schoppe, who rank 44th nationally, defeated Jessie Young and Caroline Gibbens, 6-2, at flight one, and freshmen Sara Snyder and Jess Dawson topped Callie Billman and Coco Bosman, 6-3, at number three. The Mocs took the victory at flight two, where Nicole Abel and Emma Van Hee outlasted junior Madison Dillon and freshman Ellie Schoppe, 7-5.
Furman won five of six singles points, all in straight sets. Adams, who ranks 53rd nationally, blew past Abel, 6-2, 6-0, in the top-seeded contest, and Schoppe downed Jada Young, 6-2, 6-2, at flight two. At number four, Snyder posted a 6-1, 6-4 advantage over Van Hee, and at flight five, Schulson posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory versus Billman. Dawson defeated Bosman, 6-3, 6-2, at flight six.
Chattanooga (10-7, 2-2 SoCon) scored at flight three, where Gibbens held off Dillon, 4-6, 6-2, 1-0(10-3).
Furman (13-6, 2-0 SoCon) will travel to Macon, Ga., Sunday for a 9:30 a.m. contest versus Mercer.
