Furman's Anna Morgan Advances To NCAA Championship

STILLWATER, Okla. -- Furman junior Anna Morgan (E) fired a final-round 67 Wednesday at the NCAA Stillwater Regional at the par-72, 6,303 yard Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., to tie for fifth place and claim one of two individual qualifying spots for the NCAA Championship, which will be held May 20-25 at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.

Morgan teed off on No. 10 and birdied No. 11, then she went on a tear to end the back nine, birdieing three consecutive holes from No. 15 through No. 17 and eagling the par-5 No. 18.  After the turn, she added an additional birdie on No. 3 to finish the day at 5-under, tying the sixth-best women's collegiate round at Karsten Creek, just missing tying the course record of 65.

"I am super happy to have made it to the NCAA Championship after how well I played today in the final round at regionals," said Morgan.  "I'm also so excited to play in my first national championship, because it is something I've wanted to do since I first got to Furman.  I can't wait for an awesome experience!"

Paladin sophomore Sophia Burnett (+3) tied for tenth after carding a 71 with birdies on No. 12 and No. 13.  She reached a four-way playoff with Michigan State's Leila Raines, Carla Bernat of Tulane, and Clemson's Savannah Grewal for the final individual slot.  Each of the four players birdied No. 18, forcing a second playoff hole, again on No. 18.  Burnett posted a birdie before Raines eagled to take the final spot.

Freshman Savannah Hylton (+15) finished in 34th place after tallying a 78 in Wednesday's final round, and senior Sarah-Eve Rhéaume (+18), who will return for a fifth season next year, shot a 74 with three birdies to tie for 41st.  Senior Kyra Cox (+38), playing in her final round for the Paladins, recorded an 82 with birdies on No. 8 and No. 18 to tie for 58th.

The Paladins went 8-under on the back nine to open the round, posting nine birdies and an eagle, collectively.  Furman (+34) finished the tournament in sixth place, moving up one spot on the final day.

"I'm very proud of the team for the way everyone played, not only all week, but especially today in the final round," said Furman head coach Jeff Hull.  "It was great to see everybody contribute and really get started off so well.  We are proud of Sophia and Anna for their fine play at the regional and excited about Anna advancing to next week's national championship."

No. 17 Baylor (+1) won the regional by 14 strokes over seventh-ranked Arizona State (+15).  Host Oklahoma State (+17), which ranks sixth, and 19th-ranked Auburn (+17) tied for third to clinch the final team qualifying spots.  No. 30 Michigan State (+21) was fifth, followed by the Paladins in sixth and Clemson (+37) in seventh.  N.C. State (+51) completed the top eight.

Oklahoma State's Maddison Hinson-Tolchartd (-4) won individual medalist honors by two strokes with scores of 72-71-69=212.

Furman was part of a 12-team regional field that battled for a top four finish and a berth in the 24-team NCAA Championship.  The Stillwater Regional field included four of the top 25 teams in the country led by host Oklahoma State.

The Paladins, who secured the Southern Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by capturing their 19th SoCon Championship last month, made their 23rd NCAA Regional appearance.  Furman appeared in 17-straight regionals from 1993, when the regional format began, until 2010.
