Furman's Marvin Claims Second Team All-America Accolades In 1,500m

EUGENE, Oregon -- Furman sophomore Megan Marvin claimed second team All-America accolades in the 1,500m Thursday at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Heyward Field at the University of Oregon in Eugene, Oregon.

Marvin, who hails from Chapel Hill, N.C., finished tenth overall with a time of 4:15.76 in the semifinals of the event and just missed advancing to the finals.  Twelve runners, the top five from each heat and the athletes with the next two best times, advanced to the finals, with all five qualifiers from the first heat posting slower qualifying times than Marvin.

At the East Preliminaries, Marvin finished third in her heat and seventh overall with a personal-best time of 4:13.47 to advance automatically to the semifinals in Eugene.  Marvin made her second-consecutive appearance in the East Preliminaries after running in the 800m at last year's meet.  The reigning SoCon Champion in both the 800m and 1,500m, she entered this year's preliminaries ranked 12th in the 1,500m after posting a time of 4:14.97 at the Virginia Challenge in April.

On Wednesday, sophomore Carson Williams earned a second team All-America citation in the 3,000m Steeplechase.  A native of Raleigh, N.C., he finished tenth in his heat and 16th overall with a time of 8:44.27 to claim his first career All-America honor.  At the East Preliminaries, he posted a time of 3:38.36 to take second in his heat and fourth overall and advance automatically to Eugene.  Williams, who was competing in the event at the preliminaries for the second-consecutive year, entered the meet ranked eighth in the East after recording a personal-best time of 8:37.65 at the Lee University Last Chance meet.

The top eight finishers in each event at the NCAA Championships are deemed first team All-Americans, with finishers nine through 16 earning second team All-America accolades.  Honorable mention All-America citations are bestowed on athletes who finish in 17th through 24th place.
