Orlando, Fla. – The Furman men's tennis team saw eight players compete Friday through Sunday at the UCF Fall Sizzler from the USTA National Campus.
The Paladins entered the weekend as one of seven teams participating in the tournament, which featured four singles brackets and two doubles, along with UCF, Cornell, Florida Gulf Coast, Georgia Southern, Kennesaw State and North Florida.
Furman registered seven victories in singles competition led by freshmen
Alex Han and
John Rado in the Green bracket. Han, who advanced to the semifinals of the main draw, began the tournament by defeating Kevin Patel of Kennesaw State in three sets, 7-6(4), 6-7(4), 10-5 and followed with a 6-1, 3-6 (10-6) triumph over Florida Gulf Coast's Randy Wilson. After dropping his first match, Rado received a bye in the consolation draw before defeating Patel 3-6, 6-0, 7-5.
In the Red bracket, junior
Emil Westling and sophomore
Cole Burnam both won their opening matches to advance in the main draw. Westling knocked off Alexander Hillhouse of Stetson in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Burnam also won his first match in straight sets with a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Florida Gulf Coast's Eric Oncins.
Freshman
Thomas Kennedy led the Paladins in the Blue bracket picking up a first-round win over Max Damm of Florida Gulf Coast in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Sophomore
Connor Laymon added a straight-set win on Sunday over Stetson's Bendix Shroder, 6-1, 6-0.
The duo of Han and Burnam highlighted doubles play by winning the consolation draw of the Fire bracket.
Furman returns to action next weekend, September 23-25, when it travels to Elon, N.C. for the Elon Invitational.
