GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Iowa outlasted Furman, 5-2, Sunday in the Paladins' home opener at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.

The Paladins scored two singles points in the contest.  Sophomore Jess Dawson held off Samantha Mannix, 6-2, 6-7(5), 6-3, at flight two, and sophomore Sara Snyder held on for a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (10-1) victory over Anya Lamoreaux, at number five.

The Hawkeyes (1-1) won two doubles matches to clinch the opening point.  Anya Lamoreaux and Marisa Schmidt defeated Dawson and sophomore Sara Snyder, 6-3, at flight one, and Daianne Hayashida and Vipasha Mehra slipped past senior Madison Dillon and sophomore Alexa Griffith, 6-3, at number three.  The flight two match was unfinished, with Furman sophomores Marissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson leading Pia Kranholdt and Mannix, 5-4.

Iowa claimed the four remaining singles sets for the victory.  Schmidt topped Schulson, 7-5, 6-1, in the top-seeded contest, and Mehra held off Pennings, 6-2, 5-7, 7-2, at flight three.  At number four, Hayashida defeated Dillon, 6-2, 6-3, and at flight six, Barbora Pokorna entered the lineup to down Griffith 6-3, 6-4. 

"We want to thank all those who came out and supported us today," said Furman head coach Michelle Dasso.  "It was a great atmosphere seeing so many alumni, coaches, staff, and students in the stands. We will continue having deliberate practices and keep our focus on the process.

Furman (0-2) will compete in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend in Raleigh, N.C., January 28-29.  The Paladins will square off against Vanderbilt Saturday at 2 p.m. in the opening round of the weekend then will face either N.C. State or Illinois on the second day of competition.
