JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. -- The Furman (-10) men's golf team leads the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate by five strokes after Sunday's opening round at the par 72, 7,118 yard Blackthorn Club at the Ridges in Jonesborough, Tenn.
All four of the Paladins' counting players finished the round in the top 15, including senior Ross Funderburke (-5) who is tied for third after firing a 5-under 67. Funderburke teed off on No. 10 and eagled his first hole then birdied three-straight holes from No. 13 through No. 15. At the turn, Funderburke eagled the par-4 No. 1 and added birdies on No. 4 and No. 9 to finish the day five strokes back of leader Mats Ege of ETSU, who set a tournament record with a 10-under-par 62 on Sunday.
Junior Will Morlan (-2) and sophomore Zach Frazer (-2) are tied for 11th after each carded a 2-under 70 over the opening 18 holes. Morlan tallied four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 7 and No. 8, while Frazer also added four birdies with three-straight birdies on No. 14 through No. 16. Sophomore Harris Barth (-1) recorded a 1-under 71 with a team-high six birdies to tie for 15th. He birdied four out of six holes from No. 10 through No. 15 to open the round. Â
Junior Trey Diehl (+3), who shot a 75 with birdies on No. 5 and No. 12, enters Monday's second round tied for 58th. Â
The Paladins hold the lead over Charlotte (-5) and No. 11 ETSU (-5), who are tied for second. Augusta (-3) sits in fourth place, followed by Coastal Carolina (-2) in fifth place. Â
The second round of the 54-hole tournament begins Monday at 8:30 a.m. with teams teeing off of No. 1 and No. 10. The Paladins will tee off of No. 1 starting at 10:10 a.m. and will play in a group with Charlotte and ETSU. Â
