Winston-Salem, N.C. – The Furman men's tennis team wrapped up its fall season this past weekend by recording 11 wins during the Wake Forest Invitational at the Wake Forest Tennis Center.
Furman concluded the weekend with eight victories in singles play while compiling three in doubles competition.
The Paladins were one of 23 teams that competed at the three-day tournament along with Wake Forest, Auburn, Campbell, Charlotte, Cleveland State, Davidson, Duke, Georgia Southern, James Madison, North Carolina A&T, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Princeton, Radford, Richmond, Shenandoah, South Carolina, Tennessee Tech, UNC Asheville, UNC Greensboro, VCU, and Virginia.
Leonardo Dal Boni and
John Rado paced Furman in singles play after combining for five wins.
Dal Boni captured the championship of the West draw in the B1 singles bracket. After dropping his opening match in three sets, the freshman from Sarasota, Fla., followed with three victories in the West draw. He began with a straight set win in the quarterfinals against Tennessee Tech's Alex Alvarez 7-6(4), 6-2, and followed by defeating Aryan Saleh of Old Dominion in the semifinals 6-2, 6-4. Dal Boni secured his third consecutive straight set victory in the finals with a 7-6(5), 6-0 triumph over Freddy Murray of UNC Asheville.
Rado, a junior from Los Altos, Calif., advanced to the finals in the East draw of the C1 singles bracket. He started the tournament with a win over Georgia Southern's Laurent Julia Calac in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 before holding off Francisco Sinopoli of James Madison 6-3, 6-7(4), 6-2. Rado would fall in the final to Brann Reid of UNC Asheville in three sets 6-1, 5-7, 3-6.
Connor Laymon and
Alex Han also combined for three singles victories. Playing in the C1 singles bracket, Laymon began play with a straight set win versus Mateo Aldaz of Bluefield State 6-1, 6-1. After falling in the semifinals, he would score a 6-4, 6-1 victory against Sinopoli in the 3-4 playoff. Han topped Jose Marquez in the quarterfinals of the D3 singles East draw 6-1, 6-0.
The Paladins would add a total of three wins in the doubles portion of the tournament from the tandems of Han/Rado and
Walker Allen/
Cole Rigsby.
Han and Rado, playing in the C1 doubles bracket, won their first match over Aldaz and Fernando Arguello of Bluefield State 6-2. The duo would also claim a win by injury in the 3-4 playoff against Murray and Sam Nicholson of UNC Asheville.
Allen and Rigsby defeated Merlin Mazalto and Pablo Garcia of Bluefield State 6-0 in the finals of the C2 doubles bracket South draw.
Furman will open its 2024 spring season in January.
