GREENVILLE, S.C. -- No 22 Tennessee topped Furman, 6-1, Friday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
Furman scored at flight five singles, where senior Madison Dillon defeated Lauren Anzalotta, 6-3, 6-4.
The match opened with tight doubles competition. Paladin sophomores Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder defeated Esther Adeshina and Rebeka Mertena, 6-2, at flight one, then the Vols' Anzalotta and Elza Tomase held off Dillon and sophomore Alexa Griffith, 7-6(5), to even the slate. In the deciding flight two match, Tennessee's Daria Kuczer and Eleonora Molinaro slipped past sophomores Marissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson, 7-6(6), for the point. Â
Tennessee ( 4-1) picked up five singles points for the victory. Mertena posted a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Shulson at number one, and Tomase beat Dawson, 6-3, 6-2, at flight two. In the number three contest, Molinaro handed Pennings a 6-1, 6-3 loss, and Kuczer posted a 6-4, 1-6, 1-0(10-3) advantage over Snyder at number four. Adeshina defeated Griffith, 6-0, 6-3, at flight six.
Furman (0-5) will begin its quest to defend the SoCon title versus UNCG Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
