AWENDAW, S.C. -- Sophomore Will Morlan (-5) fired an opening-round 67 to tie for sixth to pace the Furman men's golf team Sunday at the Hootie at Bulls Bay at the par 72, 7,349 yard Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.
A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Morlan teed off on the par-5 No. 10 and eagled his opening hole then birdied his next hole. After an additional birdie on No. 17, he turned at 4-under and added three more birdies on the front nine to finish the day at 5-under, just one stroke back of the five players who are tied for the lead at 6-under.
Senior Sam Lape (E) carded a 72 with five birdies to tie for 36th after one round, while freshman Harris Barth (+1) and senior Ross Funderburke (+1) are tied for 42nd after each recorded a 73 on Sunday. Barth notched four birdies, including consecutive birdies on No. 14 and No. 15, and Funderburke posted five birdies in round one. Sophomore Trey Diehl (+2) carded a 74 with a birdie on No. 15 to tie for 55th. Â
No. 41 East Tennessee State (-19) holds a five-stroke lead over 40th-ranked Purdue after the tournament's opening 18 holes. Wisconsin (-11) sits in third, while N.C. State (-8) and Kentucky (-8) are tied for fourth. Furman (-3) is in eighth place, ahead of College of Charleston (-2 9th), South Carolina (-1 10th), and Virginia Tech (+3 13th), among others.Â
Furman ranked third in the field with a 4.00 scoring average on the par 4s on Sunday.Â
The second round of the 54-hole tournament begins Monday at 9 a.m. with teams teeing off on No. 1 and No. 10. Furman will tee off on No. 10 starting at 9 a.m. and will play in a group with New Mexico and Charleston. Admission is free and fans are welcome. Results and live tournament scoring are available via http://www.FurmanPaladins.com and http://www.golfstat.com.
