Furman Maintains Firm Hold On Pinson Cup With 5-2 Victory At Wofford

SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Furman defeated Wofford, 5-2, Wednesday at the Reeves Tennis Center in Spartanburg, S.C.

With the victory over the Terriers, the Paladins maintained possession of the Pinson Cup. Bobby and Dixie Pinson, beloved friends of both the Furman and Wofford programs, have given the trophy and a generous donation in honor of the rivalry between the two schools. The trophy stays with the winning school until the winner of the next season's match is determined, and the Paladins have been awarded the trophy each year since its inception in 2005.

Furman (6-10, 3-0 SoCon) won two doubles matches to claim the first point. The Terriers' Emely Kahrs and Brianna Wilbur beat senior Madison Dillon and freshman Luca Victoria Vocke, 6-3, at flight three to take an early edge, before the Paladins rallied to even the slate with a 6-1 victory by sophomores Marissa Pennings and Ellie Schulson over Breda Brennan and Emma Sorensen at flight two. In the decisive flight one contest, 59th-ranked sophomores Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder came from behind to defeat Georgia Fischer and Lily Woods, 6-4.

The Paladins won four singles matches, all in straight sets. Schulson topped Woods, 6-3, 6-3, in the number one match up, and at flight four, Dawson recorded a 6-4, 6-2 advantage over Fischer. At number five, Dillon held on to down Kahrs, 6-2, 7-5, and Vocke posted a 6-0, 6-3 win versus Catherine Blouin at flight six.

Wofford (10-8, 1-3 SoCon) scored at flights two and three singles. Brennan slipped past Pennings, 7-6(5), 7-5, at number two, and Wilbur downed Snyder, 5-7, 6-2, 6-0, at number three.

The Paladins will play at Liberty Friday at 10 a.m. then entertain Charlotte Sunday at 11 a.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center.
