Arlington, Texas – The Furman men's tennis team closed out its road trip Thursday afternoon falling 5-1 to the UT Arlington Mavericks in non-conference action at the UTA Tennis Center.
Furman drops to 4-10 on the season while UT Arlington improves to 8-5 overall.
The Mavericks claimed the doubles point, and took a 1-0 lead over the Paladins, following wins at No. 1, a tiebreaker, and No. 2.
Cole Burnam and
Thomas Kennedy, playing at No. 1, went into a tiebreaker against Solano Caffarena and Anton Shepp before dropping a 7-6 (9-7) decision. In the No. 3 match,
Ben Cahill and
Alex Han won their third match of the season, 6-1, against Lachlan Robertson and Joan Torres Espinosa.
In singles, UT Arlington captured victories at No. 3, No. 4, No. 5, and No. 6 to register the 5-1 victory.
Jerry Barton recorded his fourth win of the year at the No. 1 position after defeating Shepp in straight sets 7-6, 6-4. At the No. 2 match,
Elijah Poritzky led 9-5 in the third set, but the match went unfinished. Poritzky dropped the first set 7-5 before taking the second 6-3.
The Paladins are off until March 18-19 when they return to Mickel Tennis Center for three straight matches. Furman hosts Converse and Richmond in a doubleheader on March 18 before opening SoCon play on March 19 versus UNC Greensboro.
