Spartanburg, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team closed out the regular season on Saturday afternoon winning its third consecutive match, 6-1, over the Wofford Terriers in Southern Conference action at Reeves Tennis Center.
Furman improves to 10-13 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon. With the loss, Wofford drops to 5-15 on the season and 1-6 in conference play.
The Paladins swept all three doubles matches to claim the point and take a 1-0 lead over the Terriers. In the No. 1 match,
Thomas Kennedy and
Elijah Poritzky topped Will Fullett and Ian Rasheed 6-3, and
Jerry Barton and
Alex Han, playing at No. 3, won 6-4 against Max Graham and Ashe Ray to collect the point.
Ben Cahill and
Emil Westling closed out the doubles portion with a 7-5 triumph over Alex Horn and Robbie Young at No. 2.
In singles, Furman won five of the six matches to secure the 6-1 victory. The Paladins recorded wins at No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 5. Kennedy beat Horn in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 at No. 4, and Barton also topped Ray during the No. 1 match 6-1, 6-4. Poritzky, competing at No. 2, clinched the match for the Paladins with a 6-2, 6-3 victory against Young. Westling followed at No. 3 winning 6-4, 6-4 over Fullett. Playing at No. 5, Laymon would defeat Rasheed in three sets 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
Wofford recorded a win at No. 6 when Graham won in a third-set tiebreaker.
Furman secured the fifth seed in next week's SoCon Men's Tennis Championship and will face No. 4 seed Samford on Thursday, April 20 at 8:30 a.m. from the Champions Club in Chattanooga, Tenn.
