Chattanooga, Tenn. – The top-seeded Chattanooga Mocs held off the No. 5 seed Furman men's tennis team for a 4-2 victory in the semifinals of the SoCon Men's Tennis Championship, Friday morning at the Champions Club.
The Paladins conclude the season at 11-14 overall and 4-3 in the SoCon. The Mocs improve to 18-6 on the season and advance to Saturday's championship match against East Tennessee State.
After Chattanooga claimed the doubles point, the Mocs captured back-to-back singles wins at No. 4 and No. 5.
Jerry Barton, the SoCon Freshman of the Year, then topped Kerim Hyatt 6-3, 6-4 for his team-leading 13
th win of the year and finished the season on a five-match winning streak.
John Rado followed at No. 6 coming from behind to defeat Kristof Kincses 0-6, 6-1, 6-1 for his fifth win of the season and cut Furman's deficit to 3-2. Chattanooga would clinch the match with a victory at No. 3.
Elijah Poritzky's match at No. 2 went unfinished with the sophomore holding a 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 lead over Gabriel Castillo.
In doubles play, Barton and
Alex Han teamed up to beat Castillo and Cortland Grove 6-3 for their third win in four matches.
