Charleston, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team won all six singles matches on Friday morning to secure a 6-1 victory over The Citadel Bulldogs in Southern Conference action at Earle Tennis Center.
Furman, who has now won 57 of its 59 all-time matches against The Citadel, improves to 8-13 overall and 2-3 in the SoCon. With the loss, The Citadel drops to 9-17 on the season and 2-3 in conference play.
The Bulldogs jumped out to the early 1-0 lead after claiming two of the three doubles matches. In the No. 2 doubles match, the duo of
Ben Cahill and
Emil Westling won their second match of the season after defeating Ted Bagwell and Zvonko Bencedic 6-2.
The Paladins responded by winning all six of the singles matches, including five in straight sets, to pick up the 6-1 triumph.
Jerry Barton, playing at No. 1, compiled his team-leading ninth victory of the year after rallying back for a 4-6, 7-5, 10-5 win over Hayden Shoemake. Westling,
Elijah Poritzky,
Connor Laymon,
John Rado, and
Alex Han would all go on to win their respective singles matches in straight sets. Poritzky topped Bencedic in the No. 2 match 6-2, 6-1, and Westling tallied a 6-4, 6-2 victory against Lucas Robins at No. 3. In the No. 4 match, Laymon defeated Sebastian Kamieniecki 6-2, 6-1 while Rado secured a 6-0, 6-0 victory against Bagwell at No. 5. Han, competing at No. 6 singles, won 6-3, 6-1 versus Noah Van Dyke.
Furman closes out its regular season schedule next week hosting Mercer on April 13 at 3 p.m. before traveling to Wofford on April 14 for a 3 p.m. contest.
