COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Furman senior Carson Williams ran a 3:55.46 mile on Saturday at the Carolina Challenge at the Carolina Indoor Track & Field Complex in Columbia., setting a new Paladin and facility record.
Williams, a native of Raleigh, N.C., was paced by senior Cameron Ponder and went on to win the event by almost three full seconds. His time shaved over two seconds off the previous Furman record of 3:57.62, which was set by Ryan Adams in 2020, and off the facility record of 3:57.83, which Eliud Kipsag of Alabama held entering Saturday's action. Williams currently ranks fifth on the NCAA indoor track championships qualifying list.
In addition to Williams' victory, the Paladin squad tallied three additional gold medals, with senior Megan Marvin winning the women's 800m and junior Sierra Bower crossing the line first in the women's mile. Junior Nick Goldstein was the top collegiate finisher in the men's 3,000m.
Marvin posted a time of 2:09.63 for the 800m victory, while senior Madelynne Cadeau finished seventh at 2:16.91. Bower, who recorded a PR of 4:45.02 to win the mile, placed 11th with a time of 2:19.18 in the 800m. Also in the mile, senior Abigail Robertson finished second with a time of 4:47.94, and Cadeau notched a personal-best time of 4:50.15 for fourth place. Sophomore Clair Garrett finished eighth with a PR of 5:05.40, and junior Callie Harper was tenth after posting a PR of 5:07.77.
In the men's 3,000m, Furman boasted seven of the top eight collegiate finishers. Goldstein secured a PR of 8:12.48, followed by sophomore Luke Taylor in second with a personal-best time of 8:20.11. Freshman Brayden Seymour made his collegiate 3,000m debut with a third-place finish after crossing the line in 8:22.91, and junior Casey Burr took fifth place with a PR of 8:24.83. Freshman Owen Shifflett (sixth- 8:29.49), freshman Tucker Wright (seventh - 8:29.89), and sophomore Colton Kempney (eighth - 8:31.59) rounded out the Paladins in the event.
In the women's 3,000m, freshman Lily Feingold placed second with a time of 9:50.85, and senior Kylie Wittman was tenth at 10:17.58.
Also on the men's side, Ponder placed third in the 800m with a personal-best time of 1:53.72, while freshman Chris Knight was fifth with a time of 1:54.88. Junior Matthew Smith finished third in the mile with a time of 4:06.55, followed by sophomore Gabe Montague in fourth at 4:08.11. Christian Newman entered the lineup for the Paladins in the 400m, where he placed 27th with a time of 57.08.
The Paladins will compete at the Bob Pollock Invitational in Clemson, S.C., and at the Camel City Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., on Friday and Saturday.
