Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team wrapped up its four-match homestand Friday sweeping the Bellarmine Knights and North Greenville Crusaders in a doubleheader from Mickel Tennis Center.
Furman opened the doubleheader with a 5-2 victory over Bellarmine and followed with a 4-0 sweep versus North Greenville.
With the win, the Paladins even their record at 3-3 overall. The Knights and Crusaders dropped to 1-2 and 0-3 on the year, respectively.
Match 1 – Bellarmine 2, Furman 5
Furman swept all three doubles matches to claim the point and take an early 1-0 lead over Bellarmine.
Thomas Kennedy and
Elijah Poritzky got things started with a 6-4 victory over Jack Batchelor and Matthew Nice. The Paladins clinched the point with back-to-back 6-3 wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Cole Burnam and
Alex Han, playing at No. 3, won the point defeating Xavier Ecarma and Vineet Ramesh, and
Ben Cahill and
Emil Westling quickly followed in the No. 2 match topping Louie Fletcher and Eli Wood.
Furman continued its momentum into singles play by winning each of the first three, and four overall, to secure the 5-2 triumph. The Paladins received wins in the No. 2, No. 3, No. 4, and No. 6 matches.
Furman recorded the match victory after registering the first three points from Kennedy (No. 2),
Leonardo Dal Boni (No. 3), and Westling (No. 4), all in straight sets. Westling ended his match first with a 6-1, 6-4 victory against Ecarma, and Dal Boni, the reigning SoCon Player of the Week, extended the Paladins' lead with a 6-2, 6-4 win versus Wood. Kennedy clinched the match for Furman with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Nice.
In the No. 6 match,
Connor Laymon closed out the Paladin scoring with a 6-1, 6-0 win in straight sets against Brent Reynolds.
Match 2 – North Greenville 0, Furman 4
Furman held off North Greenville in doubles action to secure the point and went in front, 1-0. Kennedy and Poritzky concluded the day undefeated after finishing first with a 6-2 triumph versus Juan Jose Arbelaez and Christo Timini. Playing together for the first time this season, Cahill and
Cole Rigsby posted a 6-4 win over Anthony Cassini and Will Hernandez to give the Paladins the doubles point.
In the No. 2 match, Burnam and Han were tied 4-4 against Gabriel Pegoraro and Joao Silva before Furman clinched the point and the contest went unfinished.
The Paladins won three singles matches in straight sets to post the 4-0 victory. Furman claimed wins at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4.
Laymon gave the Paladins a 2-0 lead when he won 6-0, 6-0 versus Silva in the No. 2 match, followed by
Walker Allen at No. 4, who also defeated Pegoraro 6-0, 6-0. Westling sealed the win at No. 1 with his 6-0, 6-2 victory against Timini.
John Rado led his No. 3 match versus Hernandez, 6-2, 4-1, when Furman clinched the contest and the match went unfinished.
