Furman Bests Xavier, 5-2, For Third Straight Win

Paladins Secure Fifth Win in Six Matches

Greenville, S.C. – The Furman men's tennis team generated its third consecutive victory, and fifth in its last six matches, on Sunday morning after dropping the Xavier Musketeers, 5-2, in non-conference play at Mickel Tennis Center.

With the win, Furman improves its record to 6-4 on the season. Xavier falls to 1-7 overall.

The Paladins won both completed doubles matches at No. 2 and No. 3, claiming the opening point. Cole Burnam and Alex Han, playing at No. 3, began the match for Furman with a 6-4 victory over Alex Adamec and Pascal Mosberger, 6-4. In the No. 2 match, Thomas Kennedy and Connor Laymon, playing together for the first time this season, secured the doubles point after also defeating Jorge Santamaria and Kyle Totorica by a 6-4 score.

The Paladins opened singles play by winning three consecutive matches at No. 1, No. 2, and No. 4 to capture the match. Leonardo Dal Boni and Kennedy extended Furman's lead in the No. 1 and No. 2 matches with a pair of straight-set victories. Dal Boni, playing at No. 1, secured his sixth straight win when he topped Mosberger, 6-1, 6-2. Kennedy followed at No. 2 with a 6-4, 6-2 triumph over Charlie Temming.

Walker Allen clinched the match for the Paladins with his three-set win over Totorica in the No. 4 contest. The freshman from Cumming, Ga., dropped the first set, 4-6, before answering back in the second, 6-2. Trailing 5-2 in the third set, Allen closed out the match winning five games in a row to prevail, 7-5.

The Musketeers recorded a three-set victory at No. 3 before Laymon battled back in the No. 5 match to beat Cristian Gonzalez in three sets, giving Furman a 5-1 advantage. Gonzalez opened with a 6-3 win in the first set until Laymon evened the score in the second, 6-2. Laymon would hold off Gonzalez in the third set, 10-7.

The Paladins are off for over a week before beginning a seven-match road trip at Clemson (February 22) and Jacksonville State (February 24).
