Furman To Entertain Harvard And Liberty

Marissa Pennings

GREENVILLE, S.C. -- The Furman women's tennis team will entertain Harvard Saturday at 11 a.m. and square off against Liberty Monday at 3 p.m.  Both matches are scheduled for the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.  Live results and video of the two matches will be available at http://www.FurmanPaladins.com.

The Paladins (1-4) are coming off losses to Louisville and Marshall last weekend.  Versus the Cardinals, Furman scored at flight two singles, where freshman Maeve Thornton topped Lillian Mould, 6-3, 6-3, and at flight six singles, where junior Marissa Pennings entered the lineup and held on for a 6-2, 2-6, 1-0 (12-10) advantage over Berta Miret.

Thornton continued her winning streak by outlasting Marshall's Emma Vanderheyden, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-7) at flight two, and freshman Macy Hitchcock came from behind for a 3-6, 6-3, 1-0(10-7) victory over the Thundering Herd's Aisling McGrane at number five.

Harvard comes to Greenville with a 6-2 overall record after defeating Cornell and Dartmouth, both 4-0, and losing to Yale, 4-0, in last weekend's ECAC Championships.  Saturday's match marks just the second meeting between the two teams.  The Crimson won the only other meeting between the two teams, 5-2, in Cambridge in 2012.

Liberty (4-1) will entertain VCU Saturday before heading to Greenville, then the Flames will face Harvard Sunday at 1 p.m. at the Mickel Tennis Center before Furman's Monday match against Liberty.  The Flames are riding a three-match winning streak with victories over Delaware (4-3), James Madison (4-0), and Missouri (4-0).

The Paladins are 4-0 versus the Flames after winning last year's meeting, 4-2, in Lynchburg.

Furman claimed the 2023 Southern Conference regular season title after posting a perfect 7-0 regular season record under Paladin first-year head coach Michelle Dasso.  The title, which was the Paladins' seventh straight, marked Furman's 26th overall.  Ellie Schulson was named to the All-SoCon first team for singles, while Jess Dawson and Sara Snyder, who ranked as high as 51st nationally, were voted to the All-SoCon first team for doubles.
